These traditional bowls are woven in South Africa out of ilala palm and wild grasses. They are naturally dyed using mud, leaves, ash, and plants. They are traditionally used for gathering and carrying grain. The patterns on the Zulu grass bowls symbolize different things. Triangles for men, a diamond for females, a double triangle forming an hour glass shape for a married man and a double diamond for a married woman.
